About Jesse Fister, Ph.D.

Compassionate Therapy for Religious Trauma

I specialize in working with adults navigating religious trauma, spiritual abuse, faith transitions, identity exploration, and existential questions. My approach is depth-oriented, trauma-informed, and collaborative.

Some wounds reach deeper than ordinary talk-therapy can touch. When a person's worldview cracks, they need a companion through the labyrinth, someone who can help them find their bearings and rebuild a world that sparkles with meaning again.

Many of the people I work with are:

  • Questioning or reconstructing their faith
  • Recovering from shame-based religious experiences
  • Exploring identity after leaving high-control communities
  • Navigating sexuality and spirituality together
  • Grieving the loss of certainty, belonging, or purpose
  • Trying to reconnect with themselves after years of fear or self-denial
  • Carrying wounds from the places they should have felt safest

Therapy can become a place where your experiences are finally spoken aloud without judgment.

A place where you no longer have to split yourself apart to survive.

A Different Kind of Therapy Space

This work is not about fixing you. It is about understanding how you learned to survive.

Many clients come to therapy feeling emotionally exhausted from years of suppressing questions, managing fear, or trying to become acceptable versions of themselves.

Over time, therapy can help you:

  • Develop self-trust
  • Feel safer in your own body
  • Separate fear from intuition
  • Build healthier relationships and boundaries
  • Reconnect with curiosity and meaning
  • Explore spirituality on your own terms
  • Create a life that feels more authentic and alive

You do not need to have everything figured out before beginning.

You only need a place to start.

Therapy is not about replacing one worldview with another.

Therapy as a Place to Rebuild Meaning

Together, we may explore:

  • Anxiety, shame, and chronic guilt
  • Faith deconstruction and spiritual questioning
  • Identity outside of religious systems
  • Grief after leaving a faith community
  • Spiritual abuse and manipulation
  • Building a life guided by meaning

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all. Some clients have left religion entirely. Others still hold spiritual beliefs but are trying to understand painful experiences within religious communities. Therapy is not about persuading you toward or away from faith.

Many people raised in rigid religious systems experience fear or guilt around doubt. Therapy can help you explore those experiences with compassion instead of shame.
